Diagnosing PC Gaming Hardware Bottlenecks
Published by VJGP Gaming Engineering • Updated October 2026
A hardware bottleneck occurs when one component operates at maximum capacity while another idles, artificially capping your gaming frame rate and causing frame-pacing irregularities.
1. Reading Hardware Telemetry
Using monitoring tools like MSI Afterburner or NVIDIA Performance Overlay:
- GPU Utilization > 95%: Your system is GPU-bound. This is the optimal state for visual fidelity. Every dollar invested in your graphics card is generating active visual compute.
- GPU Utilization < 85% with Low FPS: Your system is CPU-bound. One or more CPU cores are saturated dispatching draw calls, preventing the GPU from receiving geometry data.
